Both lead to top B-schools, but XAT is its own beast.

Pattern

• CAT: three sections - VARC, DILR, QA - 40 minutes each, mostly objective with some TITA (type-in) questions.
• XAT: adds Decision Making (situational judgement) and a General Knowledge section, plus an essay.

Difficulty and strategy

• XAT Decision Making rewards calm, ethical, balanced choices - there's rarely a "ruthless" right answer.
• XAT Quant leans slightly harder and more calculation-heavy than CAT.
• XAT has historically used negative marking for unattempted questions beyond a limit - read the year's instructions carefully.

Preparing for both

Your CAT prep covers ~80% of XAT. Add: timed Decision Making sets, a GK habit (daily current affairs), and two essay practices. Don't start XAT-specific prep from scratch - layer it on top of CAT.

Bottom line: prepare for CAT first, then spend the last few weeks adapting to XAT's extra sections.
